VIEWPOINT 2025: Gustavo Sepulveda, Process Automation Business Head, Panasonic Connect North America
The manufacturing sector stands at the threshold of transformation, driven by advancements in technology, shifting global priorities, and the demand for more sustainable and agile operations. As we move into 2025, the adoption of emerging technologies is no longer a matter of innovation – it's a competitive necessity. According to Deloitte, technology investments by manufacturing companies accounted for 30% of their operating budget in 2024, up 7% from 2023. This shift underscores the sector's commitment to tech solutions such as automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI), are redefining productivity and efficiency. Smart factory solutions are here to stay, and manufacturers who embrace these advancements are better positioned to meet customer demand and remain competitive now and in the future. Connected manufacturing solutions such as autonomous Surface Mount Technology (SMT) systems and pick-and-place machines enable manufacturers to advance toward Industry 4.0 and achieve their production goals efficiently. However, technology alone cannot drive the industry forward. An additional critical component is talent, and a continued focus on workforce development. A study by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute predicts that if workforce challenges are not addressed nearly 2 million manufacturing jobs could go unfilled over the next decade. To close the skills gap and build a robust talent pipeline for advanced manufacturing roles, companies must implement comprehensive workforce development strategies. Prioritizing upskilling programs and initiatives to attract new talent will be critical as more manufacturers integrate advanced technologies and need a workforce capable of thriving in these environments. In addition to technology and workforce development, services will play an increasingly important role in the manufacturing sector. Proactive care and preventative maintenance strategies aimed at maximizing equipment longevity and minimizing costly reinvestments will help factories achieve operational excellence. As manufacturers embrace the concept of a connected factory floor, they should seek technology partners capable of delivering integrated solutions that enhance productivity, efficiency, and overall value. Manufacturers that fully embrace new and emerging technologies, prioritize workforce development, and invest in services will position themselves for long-term success within the industry.
